One thing, however, that I will say if you don’t already know the gist of the story: Do Not read the blurb on Goodreads or on the back of the book! It has every single thing that I search for in a perfect reading experience: engaging dialogue, sharp characterizations, humor, passion, and realistic life situations. If I didn’t have hundreds (okay, thousands) of books on my to-read list, I could easily have started this one right over again just minutes after finishing it. To our surprise, we enjoyed it immensely. Thus, we approached this 1987 version with much trepidation. ![]() Our Review: The Ian Carmichael Wimsey mysteries were our introduction to British TV detectives. Petherbridge, who is best known for his stage work, also appeared as Lord Peter in the 1988 play Busman's Honeymoon, which co-starred his real-life wife, Emily Richard, as Harriet Vane. At 51, Edward Petherbridge wasn't much younger than Carmichael when he first appeared as Wimsey in the 1987 TV series-however, he looked younger. Although immensely popular, the series received minor criticism from Sayers' hardcore fans who complained that Carmichael, then in his 50s, was too old to play the thirtyish Lord Peter. The first appeared in the 1970s and starred Ian Carmichael as Lord Peter and Glyn Houston as Bunter. Production Notes: This is the second British television series about Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries: Harriet Vane Collection. The series is available on DVD in the U.S. There are three cases, with two of them spanning three episodes and one lasting for four. Sayers Mystery only lasted for one season of ten episodes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) for Caramenta, her alternate selves die quite often, opening up 375 worlds for her to explore-and a discovery she makes on one of them could change the course of history. The tale gets off to a strong start, introducing Caramenta, a queer, black woman with a complex family history, who uses tech that grants her access to the multiverse to collect data from alternate Earths that will benefit Earth 0, the “original.” Her exploration has one catch: the technology only allows her to visit Earths where the alternate version of herself has already died. Johnson bursts onto the scene with this thought-provoking, high-concept sci-fi debut that impresses with exceptional worldbuilding and a distinctive protagonist, but suffers under the strain of too much plot. ![]() ![]() I needed to read this kind of book right now: something fun, stupid, and nonsensical. I liked how this book is so ridiculous and asinine. I did not expect anything more than to be entertained. I was prepared to laugh and be entertained, nothing more. So I came into this book with low expectations. Come on! Slytherin romance? Give me a break, please! From there I just knew. ![]() I mean, the summary itself is just absolutely absurd. But I totally understand the disappointment - especially because it’s a promising book! Who wouldn’t want a good, standalone book where the villainous, scheming young woman takes the crown? I suspected early on that it wouldn’t be able to fulfill that promise. The book will entertain you as long as you’re reading it as a silly, ridiculous (almost satirical), nonsensical, asinine YA novel.
